Munich, 8 October 2012 – The UK‘s leading airport company BAA has selected NEC Display Solutions as the prime supplier of LCD displays to achieve reliable real-time passenger communication at Heathrow Airport’s new Terminal 2 building. NEC will deliver over 1,000 LCD display systems, comprising public displays and Flight Information Display System (FIDS) controllers to ensure efficiency across all the terminal’s flight information requirements, ranging from check-in, departures, gates, and way-finding to security and retail.

Due to open in 2014, the Terminal 2 project is the latest stage in a five-year, £4.8 billion transformation of Heathrow Airport which began after the opening of Terminal 5 in 2008. The new terminal will cost £2.5bn and is expected to be used by 20 million passengers a year. The terminal is a vital step to achieving Heathrow’s vision of making every journey better, reaffirming Heathrow's position as the UK’s gateway to the world and Europe’s hub of choice.

As part of the project, NEC will deliver over 1,000 NEC XS Series public displays, which feature new LED backlighting technology and industry standard OPS compliant slot-in embedded PC technology.

Richard Wilks, Aviation Business Development Manager EMEA, NEC Display Solutions, commented: “To be part of such a significant transformation project is extremely exciting. The FIDS is at the heart of any airport’s operation, but in choosing NEC’s XS Series displays, Heathrow has demonstrated a strong will to continue to deliver new terminal projects with a clear focus on environmental impact. NEC has a proven track record working on mission-critical projects within the global airport industry and will ensure we are able to deliver the value that BAA needs.”

The project design phase is nearing completion while testing and configuration services have commenced ahead of the planned installation into the terminal, starting in November 2012.

NEC’s XS Series are the world’s first displays that couple low power LED backlighting technology, ambient light sensing technology to manage optimum brightness in real time, and ultra-low powered slot-in OPS embedded PCs - with Intel-embedded processor technology. These OPS-compliant slot-in devices enable BAA to standardise on a single Microsoft Windows embedded build across all display sizes from 32” to 70”, significantly reducing the time and resources needed to manage the 1,000 display estate. With major reductions in depth and weight, the NEC XS Series is also one of the easiest displays to handle and install. This is particularly useful for videowall setups.

With long-term display system reliability being key to delivering real-time passenger communication and the efficiency of the terminal, BAA recognised the benefits of features such as NEC’s display thermal management system and use of LCD modules designed for consistent 24/7 operation.

“For tens of millions of people each year, Heathrow is their first impression of the UK, which is why it is so important it’s a positive one. NEC’s XS Series displays produce high quality images 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, ensuring that Heathrow continues to deliver a high level of passenger experience”, Wilks concluded.
