ARTIS-Micropia

Cutting-edge audiovisual excellence at the world’s first microbe museum

Located in the heart of Amsterdam, ARTIS-Micropia is the world’s first and only Museum dedicated to microbes. Part of the historic ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo, this groundbreaking interactive museum unveils the fascinating microscopic world that surrounds us.

The museum’s cutting-edge technology and displays bring to life the incredible diversity of microorganisms that play crucial roles in everything from food production to human health. Specially designed microscopes and visualisation systems allow visitors to observe these tiny life forms in unprecedented detail, while expert demonstrations and hands-on experiences make complex scientific concepts accessible to all ages.

ARTIS-Micropia not only educates but inspires, revealing how microbes are indispensable to our existence and showing the tremendous potential they hold for solving global challenges in health, sustainability, and technology. This unique institution bridges the gap between scientific discovery and public understanding, making it an essential destination for anyone curious about the hidden world that shapes our lives.

The Challenge

ARTIS-4

Transforming ARTIS-Micropia’s Audiovisual Experience

ARTIS-Micropia, open 365 days a year, required a complete overhaul of its audiovisual systems, which included installation of a spectacular 9.5 metre high video wall, yet modernising a world-class museum while minimising downtime presented a challenge.

The museum approached installation specialist, Solid Install B.V. to undertake the necessary upgrade. During its initial assessment, Solid Install advised that the existing infrastructure could not support the new cutting-edge equipment, necessitating a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade alongside the planned improvements. Working closely with ARTIS-Micropia, a precise one-month implementation plan was devised, an ambitious timeline which required meticulous planning to complete all installations and upgrades within the agreed shutdown period, with zero margin for delay.

The Solution

Engineering Tomorrow’s Museum Experience

ARTIS-2

The innovative solution centres on a state-of-the-art Cat6A and fiber infrastructure, integrating nearly 400 network connections to create a seamlessly interconnected audiovisual system. This sophisticated network powers everything through PoE (Power over Ethernet) technology, while the entire audio system operates on DANTE protocol.

Energy efficiency was paramount in the design so over 70 network-controlled PDUs (Power Distribution Units) were implemented to automatically power down the system outside museum hours, minimising standby power consumption.

The centrepiece of the installation is a breathtaking 9.5 x 4.8 metre LED wall, featuring an ultra-fine 1.5mm pixel pitch. After rigorous evaluation of three leading manufacturers, Sharp/NEC emerged as the superior choice, delivering unmatched visual quality and reliability.

Several Sharp/NEC MultiSync® large format displays were also carefully selected and installed, each chosen to perfectly match its specific application.

Quality and reliability were the decisive factors in every component selection, ensuring a world-class visitor experience for years to come.

The Result

The bold installation timeline demonstrated the commitment of Solid Install and its technology partner, Sharp/NEC, to deliver complex audiovisual solutions while respecting the clients’ operational constraints. Through this carefully orchestrated installation, ARTIS-Micropia has achieved its objective: “to make visitors view their surroundings and the world with a different perspective,” through the medium of cutting-edge technology and visual displays.
