Kia Metropol Arena

Versatile, robust, and reliable LED signage

Nuremberg’s new multi-purpose venue, the Kia Metropol Arena enjoys a 4000-spectator capacity offering versatile spaces for professional and grassroots sports and cultural events. The bespoke LED video cube and scoreboard by Sharp/NEC is designed to deliver the same versatile usage with robust reliability. As the new home for professional basketball team, the Nuremberg Falcons, the arena meets all the requirements and stipulations of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

But with a telescopic grandstand, the 40-million-euro state of the art arena will benefit a much wider audience, clearing the way for a myriad of uses from volleyball to gymnastics and school sports to music concerts.

The Challenge

The use of AV is prevalent in modern sports stadia to amplify the matchday atmosphere, putting spectators at the centre of the action. At the Kia Metropol Arena, multi-purpose usage required a bespoke approach which allowed the AV centrepiece to be moved out of the way when not needed.

On behalf of the general contractor, Nüssli (Deutschland) GmbH, the Sharp/NEC LED Solutions Centre equipped the Kia Metropol Arena with a four-sided LED video cube and an additional LED scoreboard.

Purpose designed for the client, Sharp/NEC constructed the square steel frame, painted graphite black, to support the precision located LED modules. The scoreboard is mounted to an additional flat construction of aluminium precision profiles, also painted graphite black. The entire framework is moveable, able to be lifted into the roof space, out of the way, much like the telescopic grandstand.

The Sharp/NEC Solution

The LED display system comprises the professional Q series, characterised by its modular lightweight design and intelligent connection system, as well as high brightness and a strong contrast ratio.

The pixel pitch of only 3.9mm configures a High Definition resolution on the 15m² video cube screens which display game play action alongside advertising content, all optimally visible for spectators.

In addition, the smaller scoreboard is integrated into the content management system of the video cube to be used flexibly by the arena’s content team, as required.

In compliance with the guidelines of the FIBA, additional elements such as a 24 second shot clock and an electric horn were installed alongside with the LED displays, with the content management system set up accordingly.

The SX[SportBox] Content Management System is designed for multiple indoor sports, adapting to satisfy all users of the venue with appropriate game information, animations, and advertising.

Ensuring an extended lifetime of the display, Sharp/NEC’s SX[TempControl] capability warns of changes in temperature beyond normal range to protect sensitive componentry.

This feature, alongside the all-metal construction supports fire retardancy for safe use in public spaces.

The Sharp/NEC Solution

Raising the profile of sports and cultural pursuits, the new Kia Metropol Arena is a fantastic addition to the community, benefiting the city as a whole as it attracts more visitors to the area.

The addition of the LED signage ensures a venue fit for the future of sports, attracting and retaining visitors and fans who are sure to enjoy the full match day experience complementing their favourite sport.
