Command and Control – Precision to rely on in an ever-changing world

Process control and monitoring as well as command and control functions are becoming increasingly complex and multifaceted. The volume, speed and diversity of information is growing in complexity all the time. Permanent situation control in real-time is of central importance in order to make the right decisions, within the shortest time, based on the available information.

The control room ensures centralised, seamless and efficient workflows where visual displays provide the vital interface to instantly access available data sources and must be perfectly optimised to support the operator. The selection of ideal-fit technology will demand careful consideration of the context and must provide the necessary flexibility as needs change in the future.

User-centred Application

From the transport sector including road and rail networks, airports, airlines and other distributed environments, to the energy sector including power generation and oil and gas as well as the chemicals industry and telecommunications; the data infrastructure needed to manage the control process and to ensure operational safety and efficiency is largely similar with three main areas of operation with varying visualisation requirements:

Mutual Situation Awareness

Demanding the largest digital canvas for mutual situational awareness, many teams and operators can manipulate multiple data sources, viewed simultaneously.

Areas and Teams Overview

Incident management rooms and breakout spaces require larger digital surfaces viewable by teams of operators to give a situational overview. Multi-usage, these rooms are also utilised as meeting and collaboration spaces with the facility to share information in real-time with remote team members.

Operational Details

Single workspaces for individuals managing operational detail alongside an overview of the common operational picture. The user may require a large surface to view multiple data sources with either a single large display or multiple displays on the desktop.

Reference Markets: From Energy to Emergency

Rapid decision making requires instant access to information with real-time, accurate, broad and varied data sources ensuring the best outcomes. Visualisation is the essential element for human perception and the visual representation and management of information is vital in maintaining smooth operation, pre-empting potential issues and reacting swiftly to incidents. The volume, speed and diversity of information is growing exponentially. The term widely used today: ‘Big Data’, not only means a huge volume of available information, but also clearly set targets, the latest technologies and the right processes in order to get the available data structured and analysed.

Control Room Types

The decisions made in a control room environment might be business critical or even life changing. For Blue Light, emergency services and surveillance, conditions require the analysis of complex situations with operators challenged to identify the root causes of a given situation as quickly as possible. In the energy markets, business can be made or lost in seconds - immediate, accurate and clear visual access to any information brings competitive advantage in global business deals and protects assets and employees from risks and harm. For utility, aviation, railway, traffic, dispatch, haulage and manufacturing – any sector where the transportation of people or products is required, effective command and control scenarios are critical.

Different control room environments will have differing spaces and needs. The crucial component is the operator, who must be able to view and manage all data across all areas via a common, easy to use interface. System resilience and redundancy remain critical in an uncompromising 24/7 environment.

ControlRoomTypes_BusinessProcessOperation

Business and Process Operation

Mostly data sources (data feeds, graphics and information) are used for business and process operations.

ControlRoomTypes_MonitoringSurveillance

Monitoring and Surveillance

Surveillance is mostly done with cameras and/or sensors but may include linking to video management systems (VMS). Surveillance and Operations can require mixed sources.

ControlRoomTypes_DataMonitoring

Data Monitoring

Usually single, or very few sources, and used for in-depth source analysis. This requires the displays to match the source resolution and run in native resolution where possible so that data is not lost in scaling. The displays must be perfectly calibrated to deliver accurate colour, contrast, and brightness.

ControlRoomTypes_RemoteControlLiveOperations

Remote Control and Live Operations

The remote control of live operations means remotely controlled systems. This requires high quality visuals usually in small numbers of camera sources. Examples are airport control tower operations, remote oil rig management or vessel control.

ControlRoomTypes_TrainingSimultationReality

Training, Simulation and Augmented Reality

Characterised usually by one or few high-resolution sources allowing operator training or mission rehearsals as close to the real operation as possible.
