RTBF Studio 4

Adaptable video wall studio backdrop

Forming a highly visible backdrop in Studio 4, public broadcaster RTBF chose video wall technology from Sharp/NEC to present the highest image quality and deliver the best possible viewer experience for the audience at home.

The Belgian Radio-Television of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (RTBF) provides a public service, producing and broadcasting content to its audiences across multiple media: television, radio, on the web and via social networks. With its roots in radio, RTBF aims to brings its values and public service media content to an increasingly digital society.

The Challenge

RTBF wished to upgrade its studio with the latest imaging technology whilst maintaining a flexible setting which could be reconfigured for different programs. Audio visual integration experts, Solufak, utilised existing mounting infrastructure to install an extra-large digital surface on a structure which can be divided into multiple video walls as needed.

Sharp/NEC Solution

Following a product shoot-out, video wall technology from Sharp/NEC was selected as the best fit for RTBF’s exacting requirements. Featuring a minimal 3.5mm bezel, NEC MultiSync® UN552V modules form an impressive high resolution video wall with barely visible image gaps.

Designed for the rigors of 24/7 operation and combining a high brightness level of 500cd/m² with S-IPS panel technology, RTBF’s choice of technology ensures its audience at home perceives excellent life-like colour consistency and uniform brightness. 39 NEC displays result in a video wall measuring 15.5m wide by 2m high, mounted on an adaptable structure enabling multiple smaller walls to be created.

For hot-swap maintenance, PFW 6880 push/pull brackets from Vogel’s were added to the structure. As the screens are in a curved arrangement, there is little to no margin on the thickness of the whole setting, so maintaining the existing dimensions had to be guaranteed, for which Solufak created a customised adapter.

The Result

Pierre Dartevelle, head of production support at RTBF explains why they chose to work with Sharp/NEC and Solufak: “Quite simple: the price-quality ratio and the colour-compliant rendering of the NEC screens in combination with the very competent control application. In addition, we also knew we could count on Solufak’s competences and AV-skills to complete this project. Installations they performed for us in the past also went flawlessly.”
