NEC unveils next-generation single board computer option cards for public displays and installation projectors

NEC updates Computer Option Card range to use Open Pluggable Standard from Intel

Munich, 01 August 2011 NEC Display Solutions Europe has introduced two additions to its range of Single Board Computer option cards, the STv2 with the Intel® Core™ i5 2.4GHz and the STv2 with the Intel® Celeron Processor 1.86GHz, utilising Intel’s Open Pluggable Specification (OPS), taking design and development of digital signs in public venues to the next level.

The recently launched PX Series projectors and NEC’s public displays that incorporate the OPS Slot offer guaranteed flexibility for creative applications, particularly in those situations where an external system would take up too much space. While the OPS standard makes it simpler for player device manufacturers and display makers to develop products that are compatible out of the box, while offering the end user a large selection of solutions to choose from.

The STv2 cards are the first option cards from NEC based on Intel’s OPS, which is supported by NEC and several industry leaders in digital signage, along with Microsoft and the Taiwan Digital Signage Special Interest Group.

The new slot-in PCs boast the latest Intel® Core™ i5 2.4GHz or an Intel® Celeron Processor 1.86GHz CPU - and integrated Intel graphics, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 320GB hard drive. Running Windows Embedded Standard 7, these offer customers a true integrated solution.

Displays such as the NEC X, P and V Series which support the new cards, give users greater flexibility for application types and offers a clean, professional look as all connectors are inside the displays including power, video and audio signals. The smaller form factor even enables integrated slot options in super-slim displays like the X461S and X551S.

Furthermore, with features such as Intel® vPro™ Technology with Keyboard-Video-Mouse redirection capabilities, IT administrators are able to run diagnostic tests, install upgrades and view and control the digital display content remotely.

“As the first industry-wide standard for digital signage, the OPS will simplify the use and maintenance of digital signage, and create a smaller product footprint, allowing for thinner displays and less space required to use it for our installation projectors,” said Thorsten Prsybyl, Product Line Manager Public Displays at NEC Display Solutions Europe.

“Meanwhile, the introduction of OPS-based products will allow easier installations, and more flexibility from content providers, resulting in more deployments by current and new customers.”

“Installing digital signage equipment based on Intel architecture results in scalable digital signage networks that are easy to maintain and upgrade to fit customer requirements for lower total cost of ownership,” said Jose Avalos, Director of Retail and Digital Signage, Intel Corporation.

“The release of the first OPS-based accessory from NEC Display Solutions is the next step in bringing standardisation to the digital signage market segment.”

NEC’s STv2 option cards will be available across Europe from August 2011 onwards.
