Reliable projection performance from classroom to auditorium

Enjoying a stunning beachfront location, Swansea University in South Wales operates across two sites; Singleton Park, and the recently developed Bay Campus which doubled the size of the university. Founded in 1920, Swansea is a vibrant, research-led university serving over 20,000 students whilst offering world-class facilities to the wider community.

Sharp/NEC integration partner, GVAV, has been the preferred supplier of AV equipment to Swansea University for over 20 years, and sole supplier since 2015. “NEC projectors are used across the majority of the teaching spaces on both campuses, alongside some large format displays.” says Richard Godfrey sales director at GVAV.

The Challenge

Developed in 2015, the Bay Campus is home to the Faculty of Science and Engineering, The College, and the School of Management.

“We fitted all the AV in the new Bay Campus, much of this has now been replaced already as we work to a 5-year refresh program. For projectors, Swansea has standardised on NEC equipment.”

The iconic Great Hall is the flagship building at the centre of the Bay Campus - a multi-purpose cultural arts venue. Within the impressive Great Hall complex is the magnificent Sir Stanley Clarke Auditorium with flexible staging and international-standard acoustics. The impressive 700-seat, wood-panelled venue is a world-class setting for performances, recitals, concerts, conferences, and events.

The Solution

“In line with Swansea’s AV refresh program, they were looking to replace two very large NEC projectors which had been installed in the Great Hall around 6 years ago. Confident in the reliability of NEC projection technology, they selected dual PX2201UL projectors as suitable for the large venue environment,” explained Richard Godfrey.

“The projectors are compact and easily transportable making it a simple swap and re-program as we fitted them to a lighting bar. All very straight forward.”

Using single chip RB laser technology, the PX2201UL laser projector delivers superb, richly intense colour, almost equal in performance to a 3DLP technology, yet at an impressive price/ performance ratio.

“Once installed, the filter-free projectors need little in the way of attention during their lifetime and all adjustments can be made remotely so they will sit very happily ‘in the gods’ for many years to come!”

Using wide interface selection and Edge Blending technology the ultra-bright dual 20,500 lumen projectors create wider, larger, brighter images, with geometric correction eliminating any distortion.

“Depending on teaching style and size of class, lecturers opt to display a separate source or to display the same content on both projectors. There’s plenty of flexibility.”

With a low noise level, flexible installation features, SDI interface and 3D support, the innovative PX Series is ideal for higher education and the leisure industry, for large venues and applications requiring pixel mapping.

The Result

Available for staff, students and the community to enjoy, hosting concerts, conferences and graduation ceremonies, the Great Hall is a jewel in the centre of the new Bay Campus putting Swansea on the map as a high-profile venue. The seating in the Great Hall retracts so it can be easily converted into a large, flat-floor space, perfect for gala dinners and exhibitions.

With the two NEC PX Series projectors in place, audiences will enjoy high quality projection performance and the AV team will benefit from long lasting reliability and flexible usage to support a wide range of events.
